They can also run out exactly at the point where YouTube confidence tells me to keep going anyway, and that's usually where a manageable problem turns into a bigger one.

Why I Needed Help Before I Started

It helped list the tools and materials commonly needed for a repair like this, so I wasn't standing in the hardware store guessing or making a second trip because I'd forgotten something obvious. Breaking the repair into actual steps gave me a clearer sense of where things typically get complicated, instead of the smoothed-over version a video tends to show.

It highlighted safety questions worth actually sitting with before I started, and helped identify the specific signs that this particular repair might be heading into professional territory — the kind of detail that's easy to miss when you're feeling confident from a video. It gave me a more realistic sense of prep time than most tutorials bother to mention, and helped me build an actual shopping list before heading to the hardware store, instead of wandering the aisles hoping I'd recognize what I needed. When I was watching an actual tutorial, it helped me understand what was happening in it more clearly, filling in context the video assumed I already had.

Everything it did was organize my thinking and fill in information I was missing. It never inspected my actual home, and it never told me whether what I was looking at was genuinely safe to attempt. That judgment call stayed mine.

What AI Couldn't Know

There's a real limit to what any of this could tell me, and it's worth being honest about it. It can't see hidden damage behind a wall or under a cabinet. It can't inspect actual wiring or plumbing, and it has no way of verifying structural safety from a description alone. It doesn't replace a licensed contractor, electrician, or plumber, and it can't guarantee that a repair is genuinely safe for me to attempt, no matter how clearly it explains the steps.

Whenever safety felt uncertain — anything involving electrical work beyond the most basic task, anything that touched plumbing in a way that could flood a room, anything where a mistake felt like it could actually hurt me or damage the house further — I stopped and called someone qualified instead of pushing forward on confidence alone. That line matters more to me than saving a little extra money ever could.

What Changed

The biggest change wasn't becoming some kind of DIY expert, capable of handling anything that breaks in my house. That was never realistic, and I stopped pretending otherwise. What actually changed was learning when a project was genuinely realistic for me to attempt and when calling a professional was actually the smarter, safer, ultimately cheaper decision.
