Rather than guessing at a vague cushion, I asked specifically where a project like mine tends to run into unplanned costs, which gave the contingency an actual basis instead of just being a round number I picked out of anxiety. Before buying materials or committing to a plan, I still verified my own measurements, got actual quotes where labor was involved, and checked local permit requirements directly rather than assuming a general answer covered my specific situation.
